Fillings
Silver amalgam fillings have been around for many years. But one drawback is that of the dark or silver color when finished.

Tooth-colored or composite fillings are a safe and attractive alternative to older silver amalgam fillings. By matching tooth-colored composite fillings with the natural color of your teeth, a dentist is able to provide you with white fillings that blend with the natural look of your teeth. The removal of amalgam fillings can provide patients with a more cosmetically pleasing, "silver-free" smile.

Time and materials for the composite fillings are different than that of the silver fillings. Cost will be more than that of a silver filling but for many, the look and beauty is well worth the extra expense.

Crowns
Crowns or "caps" are often used in dentistry to restore a tooth to improved dental health. Crowns may be used if one has an existing large filling that needs strengthening. Many times a tooth may have a large area of decay in which a filling may not adequately restore the tooth. If the tooth has very little or weakened tooth structure, a crown will fit and protect the tooth from further breakage and damage.

Crowns can take many forms and can be made from various materials. Typically, it takes two appointments to fabricate a crown. Today, crowns are made from materials that are nearly the same look and feel of the natural enamel of your teeth. The Doctors has had many years of experience in selecting and constructing natural looking crowns for patients. Our office would be happy to assess your smile and answer any questions you may have about crowns and how they can improve your smile!

Bridges
Bridges in dentistry are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Bridges are used to restore esthetics and /or improve eating and chewing function. Natural teeth can be used to support a bridge. The procedure on natural teeth for a bridge are very similar to that of a crown or "cap". The teeth adjacent to the missing tooth space are prepared or cut to hold and support the bridge to replace the missing tooth. Implants are also used to support a bridge as well. In that case the natural teeth are not cut and the implants support the pontic, or missing tooth in the arch.

Bridges can be constructed with a wide variety of materials and will take two or more appointments to complete. Anterior bridges command a very high degree of planning due to the esthetic value and will cost more due to time and materials involved to give the best natural look to your smile.

Biteguards/Nightguards
These devices or appliances are used to reduce the harmful effects of clenching or grinding the teeth. Biteguards are many times used for the treatment of "TMJ". When teeth grind together, typically at night during sleep, it may cause painful muscle soreness in or near the temporomandibular joint located just in front of the ear. Also, soreness and pain may occur from the facial muscles as well. Bite guards help reduce this stress on your joint and muscles by creating a "cushion" between your upper and lower teeth. Bite guards can also be used after crowns or bridges to protect against breakage of the porcelain within the mouth.

Bite guards are made of processed "acrylic" material that is made in a laboratory. Usually impressions are made of your upper and lower teeth and from those impressions a biteguard is made.

Often, the doctors will analyze and gather other information related to your "bite" that will insure a proper fitting bite guard that will last for years. Do you clench or grind your teeth? Are your jaws sore in the morning after you're awake? Do you have unexplainable headaches or teeth that seem to always stay sore? A bite guard may be your solution to a healthy and pain-free mouth and body.

Root Canals
"Root Canals...Panic Alert!!" Do you tense up just reading or hearing the term "Root Canal"? If you do then you are not alone. But a root canal may be your best friend if you are faced with a painful tooth that you don't want to lose.

A root canal will enable you to get out of pain and still keep your tooth. When diagnosed, assessed, and completed properly, a root canal on a tooth can give you a healthy and happy tooth that you can enjoy for years! When faced with a tooth that has a "nerve infection", a root canal would be far better than extracting your tooth.

Usually after a root canal a crown is needed to help strengthen and support the tooth. Root canals can sometimes be completed in as little as one visit but may take several visits depending on factors causing the abcess. Antibiotics are used during the process of initiating and finishing the root canal on a tooth.

Have you had a filling that has never felt "right"? Do you have a tooth that you can't chew with because it hurts when putting pressure on it? Are any of your teeth very sensitive to hot or cold drinks? If you answered any of those questions with a "yes", you may have an abcessed tooth of which a root canal may be able to stop your pain and discomfort.

Dentures
"Complete" dentures are used when a patient has no remaining natural teeth. "Partial" dentures are used when a patient still has some remaining natural teeth. Dentures do not function the same as natural teeth.

Natural teeth are "connected" to you and dentures only sit on your gums. Denture treatment will involve impressions of your dental arches and/or your remaining natural teeth. Several steps and appointments are necessary for the fabrication dentures that will fit and look properly.

Many patients think that after a set of dentures they never have to go to the dentist again. That is far from the truth. When wearing dentures, the gums under the dentures will continue to change over the years. The gums tend to shrink leaving a gap between the denture and the gums. This will cause the denture to become mobile and loose, which could lead to soreness and difficulty with eating. Gum tissue and the dentures should be monitored by a dentist at least annually.
